Everingham making up for lost time in NRL

After making his NRL debut at the age of 25, South Sydney winger Andrew Everingham is making up for lost time.

On Friday, he scored his sixth try in four games as his double helped Souths seal a 20-10 win over Canterbury at ANZ Stadium.

Everingham said he never gave up believing he would make it to the NRL. This is despite failing to make the grade at Manly and Newcastle and having spent the past three years playing for Western Suburbs Magpies in the NSW Cup, before making his debut against Penrith in round three last month.

“Everything happens in due time. I tried three times to make the Knights under-18s, but never made it,” he said.

“I then played three seasons at Manly in Jersey Flegg, but got released and went off to play for Wests for three years.

“But no matter what, I was going to keep going until I made it to the NRL and nothing was going to stop me.”

Souths coach Michael Maguire said he instructed the club’s recruitment team to get Everingham after receiving a DVD when he was still coaching Wigan in the English Super League.

However, he admitted even he has been surprised at his magnificent start to his career.

“He’s flown under the radar a bit for us,” Maguire said.

“I thought his catch for his second try was an inspirational one. He got himself in an awkward position but he pulled it off.

“Prior to Christmas, I never thought he would in the position he is now but all credit to him how he’s gone about things – he’s getting better and better.”

“I could see when I came here that he was a pretty determined kid and he kept his head down and I liked that.

“He is starting to play some really good rugby league.”
