Everingham double hands Souths NRL win

South Sydney winger Andrew Everingham grabbed two tries as the Rabbitohs sealed a second successive victory with a 20-10 NRL win over Canterbury at ANZ Stadium. The 25-year-old flyer became only the third player to score tries in his first five NRL games as Michael Maguire’s side inflicted the Bulldogs’ second defeat of the season in front of a crowd of 35,221 – a record for a Souths home game. Canterbury were the better side in the first half and opened the scoring through Steve Turner’s 12th-minute try in the right corner. Des Hasler’s men continued to control proceedings, but Souths responded with their first genuine attack, when Everingham did superbly well to stay in and flick an Adam Reynolds cross-field kick for Matt King to score. Canterbury’s forwards continued to dominate up front with Sam Kasiano and Aidan Tolman making big inroads, and they restored their lead midway through the opening period through David Stagg’s first try of the season. However, it was Souths who went in at halftime leading 12-10 through Everingham’s first four-pointer. A dubious stripping penalty against Greg Eastwood put the Rabbitohs in good field position and Reynolds kicked perfectly into the path of the winger, who hauled the ball in to score. The second half was dominated by Souths with rookie halfback Reynolds growing in confidence as the home side took the game to the Bulldogs. A 70-metre run from Greg Inglis from fullback was stopped brilliantly a Ben Barba tackle as Maguire’s side continued to apply the pressure. Everingham grabbed his second with a magnificent effort, thanks to another perfect Reynolds kick, leaping high above Bryson Goodwin to extend his side’s advantage to 18-10. The Bulldogs pressed late on, but some poor ball retention let them down as Souths ran the clock down and Reynolds added some extra gloss to the scoreline with a penalty just before the final siren. Rabbitohs prop Roy Asotasi and Bulldogs skipper Michael Ennis were placed on report for high tackles in the second half.
