Eight regulars in Broncos 23-man squad

Brisbane have named eight regular first grade players in their 23-man squad for Saturday night’s pre-season NRL trial with Gold Coast at Pizzey Park.

Coach Anthony Griffin has left out his All Star representatives headed by skipper Sam Thaiday and also given forwards Petero Civoniceva and Matt Gillett an extra week off to make sure they are over major off-season operations.

But Griffin said Civoniceva and Gillett, both ahead of schedule, would almost certainly play in Brisbane’s final trial the following week in Hobart against a strong Melbourne Storm side, when positions for the club’s opening game of the season against Parramatta will be decided.

Halfback Peter Wallace, who remains un-signed beyond 2012, will make his first appearance with Ben Hunt and Corey Parker to resume their battle for Darren Lockyer’s No.6 jumper, after they split the points last weekend in a trial against the Cowboys.

Griffin has included regular starters Alex Glenn, Ben Hannant, Josh Hoffman, Andrew McCullough, Josh McGuire and Ben Te’o in his squad which went into camp at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

He said a number of positions were still on the line, refusing to declare any player a certain selection.

The Brisbane squad is: Scott Anderson, Nathanael Barnes, Gerard Beale, Luke Capewell, Dale Copley, Mitchell Dodds, Mitchell Frei, Dane Gagai, Alex Glenn, Ben Hannant, Josh Hoffman, Ben Hunt, Dunamis Lui, Lachlan Maranta, Andrew McCullough, Josh McGuire, Corey Norman, Corey Parker, Nick Slyney, Ben Te’o, Jarrod Wallace, Peter Wallace, Aaron Whitchurch.
