Parramatta are out to end one of the NRL’s most unwanted records with victory over fellow strugglers Newcastle on Saturday.
The Eels haven’t posted back-to-back wins since round 20 of their 2010 campaign, the longest stretch without consecutive victories of any NRL club.
Centre Willie Tonga knows the team’s golden-point win over Penrith last weekend will count for little if the Eels can’t back it up against the Knights.
Tonga, set to return to the Eels line-up this weekend after being out since early May with an ankle injury, said coach Stephen Kearney had highlighted the importance of posting another victory.
“He’s stressed that we shouldn’t just be happy with that,” Tonga told reporters on Wednesday.
“We’ve got to move on and we’ve got to focus on trying to improve every week.
“Saturday’s another big game for us and hopefully we can get back-to-back wins.”
The former Queensland and Australian representative said halfback Chris Sandow was in good spirits after his field goal sealed the 19-18 win over the Panthers.
The playmaker relies heavily on confidence in his game and Tonga said it was up to the entire squad to ensure Sandow remains upbeat.
“It’s big on us boys to encourage that and be supportive of him – help him through the tough times,” Tonga said.
