Eels and Sharks deny Burt deal

The Parramatta and Cronulla NRL camps on Thursday dismissed reports linking out-of-favour Eels fullback Luke Burt with a move to the Sharks this season.

Parramatta play the Sharks on Sunday, the same day Burt lines up at fullback for Wentworthville against North Sydney in the NSW Cup.

Goalkicking fullback-winger Burt is believed to be upset over his treatment by the club, having been dropped twice this year to NSW Cup.

The Sharks were linked to Burt as a possible mid-season signing to replace regular No.1 Nathan Gardner, who suffered a season-ending injury against St George Illawarra last Saturday.

But Sharks coach Shane Flanagan denied any interest in signing Burt.

“I know Burty well, and coached him in the lower grades at Parramatta, but I don’t know where that has come from,” he told reporters on Thursday morning.

Eels coach Stephen Kearney admitted Burt wasn’t happy after being dumped from first grade but denied he wants to leave the struggling club who sit last on the ladder with just one win.

“I’d be disappointed if Luke was happy playing reserve grade,” he said.

Kearney was emphatic when asked if Burt wanted out of the Eels.

“Not that I’ve heard of, no,” he said.

The under-fire coach was also asked if he’d consider letting Burt go to the Sharks after the Eels reportedly shopped the veteran around.

“He wouldn’t want to go,” he said.

Burt is the Eels’ all-time leading NRL tryscorer with 117 and is just three games shy of his 250th top-grade appearance for Parramatta.
