Ben Creagh admits St George Illawarra’s recent run of form is a concern, but is confident the 2010 premiers are still capable of improving their misfiring attack.
The Dragons are currently the third lowest scorers in the NRL behind Newcastle and Parramatta.
Despite being within two points of Manly until the final five minutes before going down 20-8 on Friday, Steve Price’s side found it difficult to penetrate the Sea Eagles’ defence, scoring just one try through Daniel Vidot midway through the second half.
Creagh insisted a decision by Jamie Soward to take a penalty in front of the posts after just seven minutes instead of finding touch was not due to a lack of confidence in his side’s ability to cross the line, and said the team would discover their attacking mojo.
“You have to give some credit to Manly, they defended well,” Creagh told AAP.
“We’re very disappointed to lose the game, and we’ve now lost three of the last four which is not great, but I don’t think it’s time to worry just yet.
“Coming here is very tough and it took two late tries for them to beat us and defensively we were very good.”
The Dragons did manage to find the line when they opted to run up the middle of Manly’s defence, with Brett Morris, once again impressive at fullback, embarking on a 60-metre run, which resulted in Vidot diving over.
However, much of their attack was too lateral and predictable and rookie coach Price admitted it’s an area he must address.
“Attack will come for us, we didn’t get many opportunities in sets,” Price said.
“There were a couple of errors and a lack of execution. But it is work in progress and we’ll get there.”
