Brett Morris’ stint at fullback is officially over, with rookie St George Illawarra coach Steve Price reverting to the formula that worked under predecessor Wayne Bennett.
In a desperate bid to revive the Dragons’ flagging attack, Price has reunited the left edge of Ben Hornby, Ben Creagh, Matt Cooper and Morris.
It was a combination – with Darius Boyd chiming in from the back – which was the attacking backbone of the Dragons’ success under Bennett.
But it was scrapped by Price as he attempted to shake up what had become a predictable style of play, Morris replacing the departed Boyd in the No.1 and Hornby and five-eighth Jamie Soward switching sides.
The new combinations failed to gel.
Now Price has gone back to the tried and tested method, which showed signs of life in Sunday’s win over Cronulla, with Jason Nightingale the new man at the back.
“We’ve tried to change a few things around,” Cooper said.
“We’ve lost Darius in that combination but I think Jason Nightingale is getting much better in the fullback role.”
And Morris is rediscovering his mojo back on the wing, running for 256 metres against the Sharks – his best output of 2012.
“I find it pretty comfortable, the role on the wing,” Morris said.
“I really enjoyed my time at fullback but I think I’m better suited to the wing, (with) the style of footy we’re playing at the moment.
“Jason’s a much better ball-player than me, that helps with him going back there and me slotting onto the wing.”
Morris claimed it was his recall to the NSW side for the State of Origin decider which sparked his desire to return to the left edge.
“I really enjoyed playing on the wing on the weekend, obviously I played there over Origin and really like it then.
“I’ve played a lot of footy with Coops and Ben Hornby and Ben Creagh so it was easy to go back to the wing.”
