Doueihi has nothing left to prove: Gagai

South Sydney star Dane Gagai says Adam Doueihi no longer has to prove he’s worthy of an NRL fullback spot when he faces his former team on Friday night.

When Doueihi left the Rabbitohs in January it was to chase a No.1 spot at Wests Tigers after the arrival of superstar Latrell Mitchell to the Redfern club.

Doueihi, then a utility, played 11 games at fullback for the Rabbitohs in 2019 before Mitchell arrived from the Roosters, but sought a more permanent role at the back.

He signed with the Tigers for four years, and it’s understood Souths will contribute part of his contract for the first two.

Despite starting the opening two games at centre for the Tigers, the 22-year-old has played all six games since the NRL resumed at fullback.

“I don’t think he needs to prove himself, I think he’s shown that since he left the club and gone on,” Gagai said on Tuesday.

“He’s been playing some good footy.

“This is going to be one he wants to perform well in.”

Doueihi has scored two tries and averages almost 150 metres per game and his form has helped the Tigers to eighth on the NRL ladder with some gutsy performances.

And while Souths believe he has nothing left to prove, Tigers skipper Moses Mbye says there will be added feeling in the match for Doueihi.

“Playing against your old club, there’s that little bit more in it,” Mbye said.

“We’re really happy with how he’s going. He’s getting better and better each week, which is good to see.

“He knows Souths quite well and from media reports, he didn’t leave on the greatest of terms.

“He’s the kind of guy that is playing consistent footy.

“It’s just another game for us, we need to focus on what we need to do and don’t know where his head is at the moment, but I’m sure he’s focused on just doing a good job for us.”
