Deadline day for Titans’ NRP prop Wallace

Contract negotiations between Jarrod Wallace and the Gold Coast Titans have reached tipping point with the Queensland forward reportedly given until Monday to accept a new four-year deal with the NRL club.

Wallace has an option to extend his current Titans deal but has been testing the open market, touring Newcastle’s training facility last week and holding talks with Knights officials over a potential move.

The 26-year-old remains a priority signing for Titans coach Garth Brennan but the rookie mentor has given Wallace a deadline to sign the upgraded deal on offer, or re-start negotiations, according to News Corp Australia.

Wallace has an option to decline Gold Coast’s new deal and still remain at the Titans next year, under the terms of his initial three-year contract, but he could opt out and be free to leave at season’s end.

Wallace is reportedly set to fetch upwards of $500,000 a season if he stays on the Gold Coast and teammate Mitch Rein said it was no surprise the prop was in demand.

“There’s been some reports of him shopping himself around, I don’t know what the right term is, but there’s a lot of interest for him cause he’s an Origin player and is an important part of our side,” the hooker said.

“That’s the nature of our game and it’s up to him what he wants to do.

“For such a big body, he’s got a big engine and comes up with those big plays that can turn momentum and has that big carry that can get you on the front foot … he’s got that X-factor to turn the game for a front-rower.”

Wallace appears likely to retain his place in the Maroons’ squad for the June 6 Origin opener, potentially playing alongside club teammate Jai Arrow in a new-look forward pack.
