Daley still to decide on 17th man

NSW coach Laurie Daley will spend the afternoon mulling over who’ll play 17th man for the Blues in next Wednesday’s State of Origin opener in Sydney.

Both Josh Reynolds and John Sutton went through a full 90-minute training session at Coogee Oval on Thursday morning and Daley walked off at the end announcing in front of the media: “I am off to watch the video then make a decision.”

The pair were called into camp on Tuesday night after Kurt Gidley was ruled out of the series with foot ligament injury, and Thursday’s session saw Reynolds play most of his time at hooker with Sutton shifting between five-eighth and the back-row.

Daley was giving nothing away at the conclusion of training but the sight of Canterbury’s Reynolds spending almost 10 minutes working out with Brad Fittler, who is part of the Blues’ support staff, was perhaps a tell-tale sign.

Should Sutton get the nod then he would become the first South Sydney player to turn out for the Blues since Craig Wing in 2009.

A decision will be taken later on Thursday with both Canterbury and the Rabbitohs in action this weekend.

NSW centre Josh Morris said there was a more relaxed feel around the camp under Daley compared to former coach Ricky Stuart last year.

Morris will line up in the right centre role against Greg Inglis and said there is a confident mood amongst the players despite not winning a series since 2005.

“They are definitely different in their coaching styles, Ricky is a pretty intense guy and Laurie is a bit more laid back, but they both get their message across to the players,” Morris said.

“It’s intense when it needs to be and we are ramping things up over the next few days as the game gets closer.”

All 18 players came through the training session with skipper Paul Gallen showing no ill-effects from the knee injury that has kept him out for nearly a month.

His Cronulla teammate Luke Lewis also came through without any dramas having missed the last two games with a shoulder injury.
