Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos Preview

Second-placed Cronulla and third-placed Brisbane head into Round 14 as part of a four-team logjam tied for the competition lead – but the Broncos are shouldering a far heavier State of Origin load, while the comparatively unaffected Sharks are coming off a bye.

The Sharks put a Magic Round capitulation to the Dolphins behind them with a dour 20-14 away win over Manly and an authoritative 26-6 defeat of Newcastle in Coffs Harbour, re-establishing Craig Fitzgibbon’s side as a formidable defensive unit.

Nicho Hynes is the Sharks’ only Origin player and is set to back up, particularly given he’s coming off the bench for the Blues.

Siosifa Talakai’s return bumps in-form Connor Tracey out of the team in the only change to a winning Round 12 line-up.

The Sharks are scoring more points per game than any team in the NRL, with the Broncos ranking second in that department.

With Adam Reynolds in sublime orchestrating touch and dynamic ball-running form – supported by outstanding Origin fill-ins Tristan Sailor and Deine Mariner, and a hardworking pack – the Broncos carved out a brave 26-22 win over the Warriors in New Zealand last Saturday.

The scoreline didn’t tell the story of the gap between the sides, the Broncos leading by 16 before only just surviving a late charge.

But whatever way you unpack it, it was two points that were more valuable than most.

Origin quintet Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, Reece Walsh, Thomas Flegler and Selwyn Cobbo have all been named to play this weekend.

The Broncos have won eight of their last 10 against the Sharks, including a gritty 16-7 result at Suncorp Stadium in Round 8, 2022.

Whatever incarnation of the Broncos line-up heads to the Shire, it’s a big ask to down there in the wake of Origin to face the in-form Sharks and the hosts look likely to get the spoils in a low-scorer.
