Consistency the key for Roosters NRL No.7

Mitchell Pearce is confident he’s put his early-season NRL form woes behind him and says he’s ready to cement his NSW halfback spot.

Pearce produced his best performance of the year in the Roosters’ excellent 26-8 win over the Warriors last Saturday night, but said he was unconcerned about criticism of his recent displays.

The Roosters have won three of their first five games this season, but have failed to convince that they are a side that can contest the finals later this season.

However, Pearce believes the team should be given credit for recording victories when they are not at their best.

“We’re three and two – it’s not all bad,” he said.

“The wins we have got now will serve us well later in the season.”

Pearce has played in the past two State of Origin series and coach Ricky Stuart is a big fan of his talents, but he knows he will need to be consistent if he is keep his place in the side this year.

“I was getting bagged loads before last week and now everyone is saying I am playing well,” he said.

“I’m confident I can play well, but I would have liked to have played better in the first few rounds. But things don’t always go to plan.

“Consistency is something I want to achieve all the time – not just to get an Origin jersey.

“Every day I work to be better at the weekend and, hopefully, like every half out there, I can impress Sticky (Stuart).”

Pearce’s former Roosters’ teammate Todd Carney has been heavily tipped to play alongside him in the Origin opener, but the halfback refused to be drawn on whether he would like to see it happen.

“Toddy is going great but I don’t pick the team,” he said.

“I’m sure if he is called up, he will go well as will the 30 other players that have been mentioned.”
