He’s already asked the referees for a free-flowing game, now North Queensland coach Paul Green wants them to keep an eye on any attacks on his playmakers.

On the eve of Sunday’s NRL decider against Brisbane, Green also revealed he has spoken to referees boss Tony Archer more than once to discuss a number of decisions during the finals series.

“I’ve spoken to Tony a number of times through the finals, just getting a bit of clarity about different calls and just making sure the interpretations are going to be consistent,” Green said.

But he’s also urged them to watch out for late hits on halves Johnathan Thurston and Michael Morgan.

The second-year mentor on Thursday expressed a desire to see an open contest.

On Saturday, he reminded lead referee Gerard Sutton and assistant Ben Cummins of the need to protect the game’s little men.

“Obviously anything illegal, they need to keep an eye on that,” Green said.

“A lot’s been spoken about people targeting playmakers and things like that. So as long as they’ve got an eye on that, I’ll be happy.”

Brisbane legend Darren Lockyer earlier this week warned the Broncos on the temptation of over-emphasising their defence on the Dally M medallist.

“They did a good job on him when they played the first final so I know that’ll be the big focus of the Broncos – how they handle JT,” Lockyer said.

“But they’ve got to be careful. If you put too much focus on Thurston, Michael Morgan is likely to come up and bite you.”
