Penrith coach Ivan Cleary will raise the possibility of introducing a ‘coach’s challenge’ rule into the NRL at this week’s meeting of the Rules Advisory Committee following another controversial video refereeing incident.
Following the Panthers’ 20-10 loss to Canberra on Sunday, a bemused Cleary said he could not understand how video referee Paul Mellor awarded a 47th-minute try to Jarrod Croker after the Raiders’ centre appeared to knock the ball on in the air before grounding it.
A coach’s challenge could not have been used for the Croker try, given it was awarded by the video referee, but so disenchanted is Cleary – who sits on the advisory committee which meets on Tuesday – he is searching for a solution.
“He (the video ref) must be looking at something different to me. I actually thought it was a no-brainer,” Cleary said.
“I reckon if you look at Jarrod Croker and his body language after he grounds it, it often gives a good indication. I might be wrong but I reckon a lot of players out there would have expected the red light to come up. But that’s life. I guess it was one of those days in a sense.”
Cleary suggested a challenge system could be like players, captains or coaches challenging decisions in tennis, cricket and the NFL.
An on-field decision which a coach decides to challenge could possibly be sent to the video referee for adjudication.
“I think there is going to be some discussion about it this week possibly. I think it has got some merit,” said Cleary, who is joined on the advisory body by NRL director of football operations Nathan McGuirk, Ricky Stuart, Brian Smith, Mal Meninga, Darren Lockyer, Daniel Anderson and John Lang.
“There is a committee meeting on Tuesday and it is worth a discussion for sure.”
