Carney credits Robson for Sharks’ success

Todd Carney credits unheralded recruit Jeff Robson for Cronulla’s ability to steal close NRL games this season.

Robson, who like Carney joined the Sharks this season, is the less well known of one of the NRL’s most effective halves pairings – and on Saturday helped mastermind an unlikely comeback against last year’s grand finalists the Warriors.

The former Parramatta and Manly halfback scored twice in the final 11 minutes of the clash at Toyota Stadium, won 20-19 by the Sharks.

It continued a new-found ability of being able to win the close games – Cronulla have now won six games this season by six points or less.

And Carney says much of the credit needs to go to Robson, who he believes can be relied upon for big plays when required.

“Definitely, Robbo was part of taking Parra to the grand final in 2009, he’s no new kid on the block,” Carney said.

“He’s great and I do rely on him to play well. I feel I play well when he plays well.

“… Robbo’s been great all year and the combination just keeps getting better.”

Robson said he had confidence in himself to provide match-winning plays.

“I know that’s my role in the team, to lead us around the park and come up with those plays,” Robson told AAP.

“That’s what a halfback does. I mightn’t be the flashiest halfback going around but I definitely know my role in the team and what I need to do.”

Heading into their second bye, Robson said the team was pleased with their first half of the season which has them sitting in fifth place with nine wins after 15 rounds.

But the 29-year-old expected Sharks coach Shane Flanagan would be demanding a similar return in the back half of the year, saying a top-four finish was certainly achievable.

“(We want) to win more games than we lose,” Robson added.

“Eight or nine out of the 10 games would be really good, that would put us easily in the top four.

“We’re definitely where we want to be … but the first goal is top eight and after that hopefully top four.”
