Daniel Cross to leave AFL’s Bulldogs
Midfielder Daniel Cross will play his last match for the Western Bulldogs this weekend, but wants to continue his AFL career elsewhere next year.
Cross, the courageous on-baller who is set to play his 210th and final match for the Dogs against Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, has not been offered a new contract for next season.
But the 30-year-old believes he still has more to give at AFL level, and will look for a new club in 2014.
“I love this club, its supporters and all the players I’ve played with, and totally understand its position with regards to its direction,” Cross said of the Bulldogs’ decision not to table a new deal.
“While I leave with a heavy heart … I will always look back at my 13 years as a Bulldog fondly, and look forward to finishing on a high note with my teammates this Sunday.”
Bulldogs chief executive Simon Garlick admitted not offering Cross a new deal was a difficult call to make.
“Daniel has added an enormous amount to this football club since he arrived in 2000, and leaves a legacy of an ultra-professional, team-oriented player who consistently displayed great courage for his team,” Garlick said.
Cross could be an ideal fit for a club like Greater Western Sydney next season.
He has worked under soon-to-be GWS head coach Leon Cameron, a former Bulldogs assistant, and been part of a strong midfield unit with Giants co-captain Callan Ward when Ward was at the Bulldogs.
