Canterbury Bulldogs have indicated they are heading in the right direction over the past month with two wins and two gusty losses, while Newcastle Knights are still striving to prove they can still be the force that stormed into the 2023 playoffs.
Both teams take 2-4 records into this Sunday afternoon showdown.
The Bulldogs almost blew a big lead after a blistering start against the Roosters in Round 5, eventually getting up 30-26 against a shorthanded opponent. There was more to like about their 16-14 loss in Melbourne, fighting back from a 10-point deficit to hit the lead before conceding a late try.
Viliame Kikau is in devastating touch, while the fresh left-side combination of Bronson Xerri and Josh Addo-Carr terrorised the Storm out wide. A maligned pack stiffened by the likes of Josh Curran is punching above its weight.
Connor Tracey will start at fullback with Blake Taafe returning from concussion on the interchange, where Kurtis Morrin is also back from suspension. Jake Turpin and Kitione Kautoga drop out.
The Knights followed up wins over a depleted Storm (14-12) and the Dragons (30-10 in a wet-weather masterclass) with losses to the Warriors (20-12) and the injury-hit Roosters (22-20), respectively.
Kalyn Ponga remains the Knights fulcrum, while the likes of Bradman Best are intermittently dangerous and Jackson Hastings has made the most of his No.7 reprieve but the team looks a way off recapturing their late-2023 magic.
The Knights have won five of their last six against the Bulldogs including a pair of blowouts during the last 10 rounds of 2023. The Bulldogs were annihilated 66-0 at Accor Stadium and 42-6 in Newcastle
Expect those results to provide an extra spur for the Bulldogs to continue their recent resurgence.
