Campbell speaks out to back Titans boss

An emotional Preston Campbell has described embattled Gold Coast NRL boss Michael Searle as one of the best people he has ever known.

The recently retired fullback felt the need to speak out publicly on Thursday as Searle’s Gold Coast Titans empire appeared to be crumbling under mountainous debts as creditors circled and a prospective cashed-up owner emerged.

Searle hand-picked Campbell to be the face of the club when the Titans entered the NRL in 2007 because of his football talent and his close links with the indigenous community.

Campbell said he knew little of Searle’s business acumen.

But he hoped he was given an opportunity to save the club he’d fought so desperately to breath life into and in which he’d invested a lot of his own money.

“All I see is a man with a good heart,” said Campbell.

“He’s one of the best people I’ve ever known.”

Along with former NRL players Dean Withers and Clinton Toopi, Campbell regularly visits indigenous communities far and wide as part of Searle’s “Titans 4 Tomorrow” program offering young kids scholarships, incentives and hope.

“If only people could see the impact these programs are having … and it’s not just me saying that,” Campbell told AAP.

“We don’t go to these remote areas to kick a football, sign autographs or have photos taken.

“He (Searle) wants us to go their and kick goals so these kids get a better education and better awareness of health programs.

“I know they’re changing lives and I know they’re definitely saving lives and making a big difference.”

Speculation is that Searle, whose Titans property arm has debts of between $20 million and $30 million, could be asked to hand back his NRL licence as early as next week.

Former Brisbane Bombers NRL consortium bid director Bill Rae has been confirmed as a potential new owner, whether he inherits the name Titans or the club has to be re-branded.

Campbell believes Searle still has a lot to offer because he “thinks outside the box” as evidenced by him selling Campbell’s All Star vision which has become a big success.

Searle has not returned Campbell’s recent telephone calls but has sent him a text.

“I just want to make sure he’s alright,” said Campbell.

“Whatever happens, I’ll be there with him continuing to change people’s lives.”
