Bulldogs Morris takes big step in recovery

Forgotten Canterbury star Brett Morris has taken a major step in his recovery from major knee surgery after running for the first time last week.

Morris has yet to appear this NRL season after complications arose from a minor knee problem through the summer forced him to go under the knife again.

And while he is remains another two months away from returning, brother and teammate Josh said the early signs in his recovery were positive.

“I’m not too sure how far he was running, but it’s good signs that he’s coming along,” Morris told AAP.

“Hopefully they can progress him on and we can see him on the field sooner rather than later. It’s important while he’s out that we get those wins and then really kick on when he gets back.”

Josh said his brother had also battled mental demons in a rehabilitation process that will rule him out for the entire State of Origin period.

“He’s been training a lot early in the mornings before the boys get in, but I have spoken to him and he’s in a lot better place now mentally,” he said.

“He’s pretty positive about how it’s progressing now, so that’s good.”

The Bulldogs have moved to fifth on the ladder despite almost blowing a 12-point lead in Saturday’s golden point win over Gold Coast.

Morris said they were “lucky” to come away with the points.

“We probably shouldn’t have let it get to that stage. We should’ve closed it up, but the Titans are a team that if you give them a chance, they’ll come back and that’s what they did,” he said.

“They stuck in there and they had plenty of momentum there in the last 10 minutes. It was lucky we got away with a win in the end.”

The Bulldogs next face Parramatta on Friday.
