Brown to face partner Foliaki in Origin

Things could get a little tense in the Karina Brown-Vanessa Foliaki household before Women’s State of Origin.

Queensland skipper Brown will endure a whole new level of friction in the annual interstate build-up as she prepares to play against her partner, NSW back-rower Foliaki.

To ram home recent results, Foliaki’s Blues jersey is currently on display in the pair’s living room, in Brisbane, taking prime position next to the TV.

For Brown it’s a taunting reminder of the Maroons’ painful defeats the past two years following 17 years of bragging rights.

“My partner actually plays for NSW so you can imagine our house it’s very hostile leading into it,” Brown said.

“Certainly during the week we don’t talk to each other and, depending on the result, the week after is also a bit different.”

Like many players on both sides, Brown and Foliaki are also Jillaroos teammates.

And, further heightening the tension, the rebadged stand-alone June 22 fixture at North Sydney Oval is also set to split siblings.

In another example of Origin’s contentious eligibility rules, Ruan Sims’ sister Canecia qualifies for the Maroons because she played her first senior game in Queensland.

It mirrors the Gerringong-raised duo’s brothers, with Tariq chasing his Origin debut for NSW and Korbin eligible to play for Queensland.

“It’ll be very interesting,” Ruan said.

“Hopefully both of us do get that opportunity to pull on our respective jerseys, because I know I have a lot of pride in the Blues jersey.

“I love wearing it and every time I do it gives me goosebumps.

“I’ll be very proud of her for pulling on that Queensland jersey and representing her state.

“That’s something we might even see in the men’s game with both of my brothers (Tariq and Korbin) being eligible for both states as well.

“There’s always a little bit of banter but at the end of the day it just comes down to playing good football.”
