Broncos suffer two bad injuries in NRL win

Brisbane’s 32-6 NRL win over Gold Coast has come at a price, with international centre Jack Reed to have scans for a suspected fractured eye socket and teammate David Stagg suffering what appears to be a career-ending knee injury.

Veteran forward Stagg, playing his 98th game for Brisbane after returning home to the club from Canterbury this season, left the Broncos dressing room on crutches on Saturday and facing a knee reconstruction that would halt his NRL career on 192 games.

Stagg looked a shattered man as he exited Suncorp Stadium.

Reed left the ground with a patch over his right eye with the club sweating on a specialist report.

There were concerns Reed had suffered a detached retina attempting to tackle giant Gold Coast rival Jamal Idris.

But that was later amended to a possible fractured eye socket.

Brisbane, who play the Bulldogs next weekend before losing several stars to Origin duty, already have injury issues with representatives Ben Hannant (calf) and Justin Hodges (cracked rib) on the sidelines along with five-eighth Scott Prince (hamstring).

Brisbane skipper Sam Thaiday, who scored his first try of the season with his new daughter Grace in the crowd for the women in league round, said he had his fingers crossed for Stagg.

“He’s a great utility player which he showed out there tonight taking hit ups, playing on the edge and in the centres,” he said.
