A week after Ben Hunt’s re-signing, Brisbane have announced young gun Corey Oates has secured a two-year NRL contract extension as momentum builds under new coach Wayne Bennett.

The new deal for 19-year-old Oates – who was already locked in until 2015 – ensured the boom backrower would stay until the end of the 2017 season.

“It’s good to get it over and done with. It was a lot of arguing and putting stuff out there but we have finally come to an agreement and I can’t wait for the next three years,” Oates – who turns 20 next week – told the Broncos website.

“This has been my club since I was a little boy, so the last thing I wanted to do was leave.”

Oates faced a learning curve this year by playing 20 games in the forwards after exploding onto the NRL scene on the wing in 2013.

“It was a big change but second row is the position I prefer,” he said.

Oates was confident of playing the last two pre-season trials for Brisbane next year after recently undergoing shoulder surgery.
