Bronco Norman ready to come of age in NRL

Rising Broncos NRL playmaker Corey Norman is celebrating his 21st birthday but it’s Saturday night when he’s most determined to come of age as Darren Lockyer’s five-eighth replacement.

Norman and fellow youngster Ben Hunt start their on-field duel for Lockyer’s Brisbane No.6 jersey when they team up in the halves against North Queensland at Redcliffe’s Dolphin Oval.

With seasoned halfback Peter Wallace rested from the opening trial match of the year, Norman knows plenty is riding on their performances against the youthful Cowboys.

Broncos coach Anthony Griffin has three pre-season trials to decide on his new five-eighth before the March 2 NRL season-opener against Parramatta and will have Wallace back next week against Gold Coast.

Norman, 21 on Friday, burst onto the scene two years ago in an eye-catching trial debut for Brisbane to be quickly marked as a potential successor to Lockyer.

But he’s sick and tired of all the talk and speculation of who will replace the Test, Queensland and club great.

“One hundred per cent – it was going on at the end of last year as well, so I’m a bit over it,” Norman said on Friday.

“The next couple of weeks are going to be crucial to see who gets the spot between me and Benny so I just want to get out there and have fun and play good.”

Despite their desire to nab the prize role, Norman and Hunt have kept their friendship and helped each other through an intense pre-season.

“We’re pushing each other which is good and that’s what’s going to bring our best game out,” said Norman, who will wear No.7 on Saturday night.

“It doesn’t seem like that when we’re training but, at the end of the day, we are looking for that No.6 jersey.”

Titans recruit Luke Capewell may also get time in the halves but will start at hooker for the young Brisbane outfit.

Former Broncos forward Ashton Sims will captain the Cowboys who will feature a dozen NRL players including Sydney Roosters recruit Kane Linnett and ex-Canberra Raider David Milne.
