Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels 2014 NRL Round 5 preview, tips and teams

The Broncos travelled to Wollongong last Friday night to take on the undefeated Dragons at Win Stadium.

Another sensational start by the Broncos, the fourth time this season they have opened the scoring inside of the first ten minutes of their games, saw Matt Gillett cross twice and race to a 12 – nil lead, putting the home-side on the back-foot from the start.

Every time the Dragons scored, the Broncos replied almost immediately and were able to maintain the advantage established early throughout the game, winning 36 – 20.

It means the only loss suffered by the Broncos this year has been to the reigning Premiers Sydney Roosters, who escaped with victory by scoring in the final minute of the game.

It has been impressive start to the season by the Broncos with halfback Ben Hunt in sensational form behind a committed forward pack that is more than holding its own each week.

Things only get better for the Brisbane this week as they’ll welcome back Co-captain Justin Hodges who hasn’t played since he ruptured Achilles suffered in August of last year.

Parramatta, who were coming off an unlucky defeat to Manly in round 3, hosted the in-form Penrith Panthers last week in the western Sydney derby.

Parramatta opened the scoring against the run of play after centre Willie Tonga, took an intercept deep inside of his own territory and run 90 metres for his first try of the season.

As their performances from the previous week suggested it would be, it was a tight struggle for most of the match with the home-side only getting the upper hand in the final quarter, running in three tries including one to Semi Radradra, is sixth for the year, and in the end ran out deserved victors 32 – 16.

Parramatta appears to be a vastly improved side and the Roosters debacle aside, have been very good in each game this season.

Former Bulldog Nathan Peats has been a great addition to the club and the hooker has a high work rate, registering 52 tackles last week and ensuring Parramatta’s attack received good ball.

The Broncos were one of only five teams that Parramatta were able to beat last year, defeating them 19 – 18 in round 9 last year before the Broncos exacted some revenge in round 23, 22 – 12.

That win balanced the ledger 2 – 2 over the last four clashes between the two sides since 2012 and whilst this game should be closer than the current market suggests, the Broncos should be able to break the recent head-to-head deadlock with a win here.
