Brett Morris not picky on NSW position

After a flying start in his new position for Canterbury, Brett Morris is a contender for the vacant NSW State of Origin fullback role – but he says he’d be happy to play anywhere in the Blues backline.

Blues winger Morris admitted on Wednesday he felt like he had been given a new lease on life after moving from St George Illawarra to the Bulldogs and being shifted by coach Des Hasler from the wing to fullback.

Hasler has already declared his belief that Morris should get first crack at the NSW No.1 jersey vacated by Jarryd Hayne.

But Morris said he would welcome a jersey with any number on the back in NSW coach Laurie Daley’s team when it defends the Origin title against Queensland this season.

“It’s a rep team, you’re going to be happy wherever you get picked,” Morris said.

“I’m certainly not focusing that much on playing fullback for NSW at the moment, I’m just trying to play the best footy I can here at the Bulldogs.

“At the moment my main focus is playing good footy for the Bulldogs.

“I just think there are some many great No.1s that NSW have that I can’t let it get to my head.”

He has been a staple of the NSW side for the last five years but all ten of his State of Origin appearances have been on the wing.

As Morris said, he also has stiff competition.

Daley will be also considering Matt Moylan, Brett Stewart, Will Hopoate, Josh Dugan and James Tedesco for the No.1 role.

Hasler’s decision to lure Morris to Belmore is already paying dividends, with the 28-year-old adding attacking punch to a side which struggled for points last year, crossing the stripe three times in his first three games.

Morris said he felt rejuvenated after joining last year’s grand finalists, an observation echoed by Bulldogs centre and his twin brother Josh.

“You can just see he’s happy here and playing good football,” Josh said.
