Boyd still a chance for Broncos NRL final

A depleted and desperate Brisbane are holding onto a slim hope hamstrung skipper Darius Boyd could make a shock NRL finals appearance against the Sydney Roosters on Friday.

The Broncos fullback is in extreme doubt because of the injury suffered in last week’s win over North Queensland and did not travel to Sydney for Monday’s finals launch.

Boyd told News Corp he was focusing on returning for week two of the finals and did not want to rush back.

However Broncos teammate Sam Thaiday said he would be given every opportunity to prove his fitness and was still a chance to take on the Roosters at Allianz Stadium.

“He’s not having a day off at the moment,” Thaiday said at the launch of the NRL finals.

“He’ll continue to rehab and do everything he can to try and play. Being in the position we’re in we’re lucky we do get a second chance.”

Boyd is having injections in his hamstring aid recovery with Kodi Nikorima expected to move to fullback if he does not pull up well.

Rejuvenated veteran Benji Marshall would then come into the halves to partner Anthony Milford.

The Broncos have been hit with a hefty injury toll on the eve of the finals with hooker Andrew McCullough (knee) and Korbin Sims (broken arm) both out for the season.

Asked if the Broncos could pick up momentum, a blunt Thaiday admitted his side had everything going against them.

“It’s not easy actually, it’s very hard,” Thaiday said.

“And we are going to have to be on-song against the Roosters.

“The second week is going to be harder for us. We would love to do it the easy way.”
