Darius Boyd is in doubt to play for Queensland in the opening match of the State of Origin series after suffering a suspected high ankle sprain during Newcastle’s 28-12 NRL loss to the Warriors on Sunday.
Boyd suffered the injury five minutes into the second half in Auckland when his left leg was trapped in a tackle.
He played on for about 10 more minutes before going off and later left the ground with the leg in a moon boot.
Newcastle team performance director Jeremy Hickmans said it was too early to say how exactle how serious the injury was, with fullback Boyd to undergo scans after the Knights return to Newcastle on Monday.
“It’s looking like a high ankle sprain at the moment,” he said.
“We’ll know the extent of it when we get the scans tomorrow.”
Asked about Boyd’s chances of making the Origin opener, Hickmans said: “I wouldn’t like to guess on that one.
“It’s one of those (injuries) where, if there’s not that much damage, he will be pretty close. If there is, he won’t.”
Boyd’s injury was the first of a double blow for the Knights, with ex-NSW winger Akuila Uate going down with rib cartilage damage a minute later.
Hickmans said it was also too early to say if Uate would be available for the Knights’ match against South Sydney next weekend.
Before the two injuries, Newcastle were leading 12-10 and coach Wayne Bennett said the double mishap proved costly.
“After that, it was always going to be a battle for us,” he said.
“Those key players in those key positions are hard to replace.
“It throws everything out of kilter at that stage. We were still in the game. We were not out of it.”
