Blues rookies dominate Kangaroos squad

NSW are set to benefit from the influx of rookies into Australia’s Four Nations squad as they chase back-to-back State of Origin series wins next year for the first time since 2005.

Of the 10 rookies selected in coach Tim Sheens’ injury-hit Australian side for the Four Nations, eight are from NSW.

The 24-man squad contains 15 players from NSW.

In naming the team on Tuesday, Sheens admitted that injuries to some of the Kangaroos’ regulars such as Maroons stars Billy Slater, Matt Scott, Darius Boyd and Nate Myles, meant some rookies were being blooded earlier than might have otherwise been the case.

However, it is a boost to the depth of the Blues’ ranks moving forward and coach Laurie Daley recognised the flood of NSW players into the Australian side as recognition of their first series win this year since 2005, ending eight years of Queensland dominance.

“They all dream of playing State of Origin for NSW and Test football for their country and this is a great result,” Daley said in a statement on Tuesday.

“I know just how hard they have all worked to get the job done for their clubs and state and it’s a wonderful reward for the players.

“That’s so exciting for them and also for NSW.

“It’s a great effort to get into the squad and it will be fantastic for them to get experience at Test level and learn from some of the best.”

Josh Jackson, Alex Johnston, David Klemmer, Josh Mansour, Sione Mata’utia, Daniel Tupou, Dylan Walker and Aaron Woods are the Blues’ Test rookies selected in the Kangaroos’ squad for the four-week tournament.

In an indication of the bright future for the Blues, only Tupou and Woods have played Origin football so far.

The two Queensland rookies in the squad are Aidan Guerra and Ben Hunt.
