Better to come from Bronco Norman

Brisbane centre Justin Hodges believes young five-eighth Corey Norman is blossoming into a Broncos star now he’s coming to terms with replacing club legend Darren Lockyer.

Lockyer and another champion Brisbane No.6 from yesteryear, Wally Lewis, were on hand at Suncorp Stadium to witness Norman’s best performance in 28 games, as he and fellow young gun Ben Hunt dismantled Canberra 30-6, with an eye-catching display in the halves.

The 96kg Norman scored two tries, kicked well and opened up the Raiders defence on a number of occasions with his powerful running game.

Hodges says Norman’s best is still yet to come.

“It was a massive step forward for the club with those two young guys in the halves playing like they did,” said Hodges who laid on Hunt’s second-half try with a damaging dummy-half bust past four defenders.

“We all knew Corey could play, we all knew how good he was.

“He’s just needed to play some games to find his confidence.

“He’s starting to believe in himself now which is good.”

Hodges said while Norman was showing he was a better ball runner than passer, Hunt was outstanding as Peter Wallace’s late replacement.

“I thought Ben really stood up, he was great,” said Hodges.

“I love seeing these young players get the praise they deserve.”

Norman said he enjoyed being reunited with his under 20s teammate Hunt.

“We went really well together back then and I thought we went really well (last) tonight,” said the official man-of-the-match.

“We were pretty confident we’d go well.”

Norman however admitted taking over from a legend like Lockyer had been intimidating.

“It played on my mind for a while that I was taking over from a legend,” he told AAP.

“But I put that behind me because I knew if I kept worrying about it things would go bad.”

Young hooker Andrew McCullough will have scans on an injured thumb but Brisbane’s medical staff weren’t expecting any bad news.

“He had pretty good strength in it after the game and the scan is just precautionary,” said coach Anthony Griffin.

Canberra captain Terry Campese still needs scans to determine the full extent of his knee injury, however indications are it’s just a medial strain and he’ll miss between two and four weeks of action.
