Wayne Bennett admits he isn’t sure what his options are after more injuries to Brisbane’s forward pack in a worrying NRL loss to Manly.
Bennett conceded Alex Glenn (knee) and Payne Haas (shoulder) would both miss at least one week after becoming casualties in the 38-24 loss.
Haas partially dislocated his shoulder but played on briefly, while Bennett believed Glenn had a grade two tear in his medial ligament and would miss about one month of football.
They will join experienced pair Matt Gillett (neck) and Josh McGuire (ankle) on the sidelines and further exacerbate a problem Bennett admits they have no solution to.
“We’re lacking some experience there right now and each week it multiplies,” he said
“They’re (the young forwards) not used to being up (to the required level of intensity) every week, they haven’t played enough football.
“They’re on the bench (the leaders) and they’re the keys … I don’t know what my options are now.”
After consecutive wins the Broncos slipped to 5-5 for the season, with all three Queensland teams now outside the top eight.
“We get some progress, then we go backwards, we regress,” Bennett said.
“(We had) a couple of good weeks, a good month actually … but the fifth week we’re not consistent enough.”
Brisbane trailed from the second minute and despite several moments of brilliance were always chases there tails as strife-torn Manly broke a run of five losses.
Out of sorts utility Jack Bird failed to light it up in his move to centre, while Bennett refused to point the finger at returning half Kodi Nikorima and five-eighth Anthony Milford despite a spirited performance from his young props.
“We got off to a pretty ordinary start, got ourselves back into it and just gave it all up again,” he said.
“When we defend like we did tonight … those guys aren’t going to be the difference.”
