Benji to help Milford at NRL’s Broncos

Benji Marshall insists he can help Brisbane playmaker Anthony Milford recapture his best form after the veteran half impressed at his first training session with his new NRL club on Monday.

But the 31-year-old Marshall was uncertain whether he would do it as Milford’s halves partner, saying he was just trying to nab a spot in Brisbane’s top 17.

Thrown a lifeline by Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, the veteran admitted his priority was to have fun again after an injury marred 2016 with St George Illawarra which almost left him on the NRL scrapheap.

“To be honest last year looked like being my farewell,” Marshall said.

“This is my chance to enjoy the footy, be myself and do the things that I have enjoyed, this decision is pretty much about me.”

However, Marshall said a goal was to help spark Milford’s running game in 2017.

Milford picked up this year where he left off from guiding Brisbane to the 2015 grand final before fading in attack late in the season.

“This is my 15th season. I think I can help with experience and calming nerves,” Marshall said.

“I don’t he (Milford) is too dissimilar to the way I played.

“I think if I can give some advice it is what I have lost in the last couple of years – don’t be caught being the ball player.

“Play to your strength and I think that is his running game.”

Not that Milford was angling to replace Broncos halfback Ben Hunt.

Asked where he wanted to play for Brisbane, the former Kiwi international halfback said: “To be honest with you I don’t now what it is.

“But wherever it is I want it to be in the top 17. I will try my hardest to make that happen.”
