Benji Marshall in rugby talks with Blues

Benji Marshall will meet Blues coach Sir John Kirwan in Auckland on Friday, the Super Rugby franchise has confirmed.

Marshall’s flying visit with manager Martin Tauber is his second meeting with the Blues after his decision last month to leave West Tigers and the NRL to take up a career in rugby union.

He returns to Australia on Friday night, in time to join the Tigers for Saturday training and Sunday’s NRL clash away to Gold Coast.

A Blues spokesman confirmed Marshall was in town to speak to the franchise.

He met Kirwan and Blues chief executive Andy Dalton in Sydney last month.

Kirwan says he is confident Marshall will have no problem adapting to rugby, and offers something extra off the field as well.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of people intrigued, and want him to do well,” he told Radio New Zealand.

“This is the Blues, this is Auckland, and we’re about a little bit of razzle-dazzle as well. If Benji Marshall’s coming to town, Aucklanders will turn up.”

Marshall is estimated to earn $A700,000 a year at West Tigers, supplemented by a lucrative television presenting contract with Channel Nine.

Under the NZ Rugby Union (NZRU) collective agreement, he would earn no more than $NZ240,000 ($A215,875) playing a full season of Super Rugby and domestic ITM Cup rugby.

The NZRU can top up player contracts, as it did to lure Sonny Bill Williams in 2010, but has indicated it won’t do so for Marshall.

The NSW Waratahs and Melbourne Rebels have also made tentative enquiries to Tauber, but neither has tabled a formal offer for Marshall’s services.

Any potential deal with an Australian Super Rugby side won’t be topped up by the Australian Rugby Union as Marshall has ruled out playing for the Wallabies.
