Manly coach Trent Barrett is expected to shed some light on his coaching future when he fronts the media for his weekly press conference at Brookvale Oval on Thursday morning.
Speculation has surrounded the final two years of Barrett’s contract at the Sea Eagles since reports emerged this week that he was ready to walk out of the club at the end of the season.
It’s believed Barrett’s frustrations largely centre around a lack of resources and support available for his football department, as the club continue to operate without a recruitment manager.
The club reaffirmed that it was looking to address those issues in a brief statement on Wednesday, but refused to say whether Barrett would stay on as coach next year.
“The club is addressing the matters which have been the subject of recent public speculation in relation to its head coach, Trent Barrett, and does not intend to make any further statement at this time,” it read.
“The club’s focus remains on ensuring the best possible finish to the 2018 NRL season on behalf of its playing group, members, fans, corporate partners, owners and its community at large.
“A full statement will be made at the appropriate time.”
Barrett has had to endure a nightmare three years in his first stint as an NRL coach, with the Sea Eagles bouncing from scandal to scandal.
He took the club to last year’s finals series in sixth spot, but has had this year’ campaign punctuated by a number of issues and injuries, including salary cap problems stemming from breaches relating to the past five years.
Manly players had Wednesday off, but will return to training on Thursday for their captain’s run ahead of the final home game of the season against the Gold Coast on Friday evening.
