Ball security key for Warriors in NRL

Patience and ball security will be the main focus for the Warriors as they prepare for their second NRL clash of the season.

An error-prone Warriors let Manly out to a 16-0 lead in the seasonal debut on Sunday and, despite a strong comeback, Manly ran out 26-20 winners.

The Warriors travel to Sydney for a rare Monday night clash against Parramatta, who were 18-6 losers to Brisbane at the weekend.

New Warriors coach Brian McClennan says cutting down turnovers will be important if the team want to avoid beginning the season with two losses.

“The fact is that we need to have a lot more patience,” McClennan said.

“If you turn the ball over, you don’t get a chance to be able to get to your kicks and apply some pressure and making your opponents come out of their end.

“We’ve got to learn our lessons quickly and that’s what we’ll be working on.”

An injury to centre Jerome Ropati has given Krisnan Inu a start against his former team, partnering 20-year-old Konrad Hurrell in the centres.

McClennan said Inu, a former Kiwi, missed selection against Manly on form but he would be a valuable addition to the squad for Monday.

“He has good experience in first grade and, with Jerome getting injured on the weekend, we felt it was important to get that experience back into the squad.”

Despite the issues with errors, McClennan said there were a number of positives to take out of the Manly game.

“Our game sense was down a bit, but we’re also pretty excited by the potential that we have as a team,” he said.

“We weren’t too far away from a quality side and yet there’s so much more we can improve upon.”
