South Sydney coach Michael Maguire says he’ll give former New Zealand skipper Roy Asotasi every chance to prove his fitness for Saturday night’s NRL clash with Cronulla.

Asotasi has two NSW Cup games under his belt after returning from a nasty pectoral injury suffered earlier in the year and has been included on the Rabbitohs’ extended bench.

Maguire said on Thursday that no final decision had been made on Asotasi but he was confident the experienced prop would be passed fit to make his long-awaited return to the top grade.

Asotasi was the club’s sole skipper up until this season when new coach Maguire named him as one of several co-captains.

Maguire said Asotasi, a 2004 premiership winner with Canterbury, would bring invaluable finals experience to the young Rabbitohs squad as they prepare for the playoffs.

“Massive amounts of confidence, Roy over his time is a very experienced player and he’s played in big games and this is the time of year he plays for so it’s great to get a player like that back in,” said Maguire.

“He’s showed good signs the last two games. I’m more than likely going to give him a chance this weekend I just want to make sure he gets through the week through training.

“Roy played a very good game last week for Norths.

“He’s feeling really good at the moment, it’s probably more his lungs than anything … just getting the habits that you form at training. Make sure you’re working with each player on the field.”
