Ashley Harrison announces NRL retirement

Gold Coast veteran Ashley Harrison will hang up his boots at the end of the season after 15 years in the NRL.

The 32-year-old lock has a year left on his contract with the Titans, but on Monday announced his decision to retire from the sport and take up a job in the finance industry.

Harrison will run out for his 272nd first-grade match on Friday at home against Brisbane, the team with whom he began his career back in 2001.

The Queensland representative played 52 games for the Broncos, before moving to South Sydney in 2003 and then the Sydney Roosters in 2007.

He joined the Titans in 2008, so far racking up 111 appearances for the club – the third-highest in Gold Coast’s short history.

Harrison made his State of Origin debut in 2005, featuring in 15 clashes with NSW and winning six series in the process.

Titans coach John Cartwright thanked his senior charge for the professionalism he’s shown and the impact he’s on the team.

“His influence is enormous at our club; he’s irreplaceable,” Cartwright said in a statement.

“He is just consistent every week at club level, season after season, and has shown his quality through how valuable he has been to Queensland over seven series.

“He’s a player others want beside them and he continues to be one of our best this season.”

Titans executive director Michael Searle praised Harrison for announcing his decision this early in the season and the way he told coaching staff and teammates.

“Ash Harrison has been a wonderful leader on and off the field for many years and I would expect him to play a role in its future for many years to come,” Searle said.

“It is critical for our games future to keep people like Ashley involved in the games administration.”
