Anasta wants Mini to skipper Roosters

With a minimum of four matches of his Sydney Roosters career remaining, skipper Braith Anasta has anointed Anthony Minichiello as the perfect man to replace him next season.

Anasta will join Wests Tigers next season on a two-year deal, ending a six-season association with the Roosters.

“The person that comes to mind immediately is Mini. He’s an inspiration to the club,” Anasta said.

“We’ve got a young squad and I am not too sure if anyone else is quite ready for the captaincy.

“There are plenty of potential leaders in the team but whether they’re ready right now I am not too sure.

“I guess you could try and see how they go but Mini would be my choice.”

Roosters coach Brian Smith floated the idea of taking the captaincy off Anasta for the last few matches of the season to audition players for the position.

The 30-year-old was picked to succeed Craig Fitzgibbon as skipper by former coach Brad Fittler in 2009 and, although reluctant to give up the position, he said he’d be happy to do so for the benefit of the team.

“Of course I would, but I would have to speak to Smithy and rest of people at the club,” he said.

“I haven’t heard a single thing about it, only what’s been in the media. But I’d be happy to address it.

“I love the captaincy and I am forever grateful to Freddie (Fittler) for giving it to me. It means the world to me and it still does. This is a great club.

“I wouldn’t want it to be taken away from me But if it was, I would understand it.”

With Warriors five-eighth James Maloney joining the Roosters next season and New Zealand superstar Sonny Bill Williams set to sign after a lucrative rugby union stint in Japan, Anasta can only see good times ahead.

“There are so many great young players with talent here,” he said.

“They have some great buys coming here and I can only see a bright future for the club.”
