All Stars league clash booked for Brisbane

The traditional rugby league season opener – the All Stars clash – will be held at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium next year.

The Australian Rugby League Commission confirmed the move on Thursday, tipping a sellout crowd at the 52,500-capacity venue when the fourth annual All Stars clash is held on February 9.

What began as an idea discussed between former Gold Coast playmaker Preston Campbell and ex-Titans boss Michael Searle has become so successful it has outgrown its former home Skilled Park.

Former Test playmaker Laurie Daley will return as Indigenous All Stars coach while Wayne Bennett will again take up the NRL team’s reins.

Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith has been confirmed as NRL All Stars captain while Brisbane’s Sam Thaiday will lead the Indigenous outfit.

Each team will boast 20 players with 16 selected by fan vote.

The Rugby League Indigenous Council will appoint the remaining four members of the Indigenous team.

For the NRL All Stars, the Australian and New Zealand skippers receive direct entry while Bennett will pick the remaining two players.

Voting starts in January while tickets went on sale on Thursday.
