2012 NRL Finals Week 1 preview – Canberra Raiders vs Cronulla Sharks

Sunday 9th September, Canberra Stadium

The second elimination and final match of the first week of finals sees Canberra playing host to Cronulla. The Raiders have finished the season in a flurry registering nine wins from their last twelve matches, the last five in succession. Amongst these wins was a season best performance a fortnight ago when they dominated the Canterbury Bulldogs from the start handing the minor premiers their biggest defeat of the season 34-6. That was backed up last week with another attacking display over the Warriors (42-22) and which secured fifth spot and the home final. It’s their defence that will have to be to the forefront this week as the Raiders clearly have the worst defensive record of any team competing in the finals. After being a genuine top four team passing the half way mark of the season, the Sharks have seen their position on the ladder gradually slide as they recorded only two wins of their past eight matches. Although their last three matches have been against fellow finalists South Sydney (won 20-7), Storm (lost 20-18) and Cowboys (lost 36 – 22) their recent win/loss record is not one you want to be taking into a finals campaign.

The momentum clearly appears to be with the Raiders and a repeat performance of their effort against Canterbury will see them winning here however, on closer inspection the form of the Sharks is not to be underestimated. They beat Souths and should’ve won against the Storm where they conceded two tries in the last three minutes to lose by two points. The prices on offer around the Sharks do attract some interest. The Raiders have very little big game experience amongst their roster and will appreciate the comfortable surrounding and support of their home ground to help them prepare for this match, although they just break even with a 6-6 at home this year. If the Sharks can put the last few weeks behind them and hold the Raiders in the early stages of the match, think they have demonstrating throughout the season that they have the talent and ability to give this a shake. The Raiders will want and need to start well, their record when chasing down a team isn’t has strong as when they are leading. The two sides have met twice this year and share the honours with one win apiece.

SHARKS 1-12 @ $3.30
