When it comes to his faltering V8 Supercars championship bid, Ford’s Will Davison is taking a win or bust approach to Sunday’s Bathurst 1000.
Davison goes into the endurance race sitting fourth in the title standings, 236 points behind leader Jamie Whincup.
With 300 points going to the winner of Sunday’s classic at Mount Panorama, Davison is out to mark his 100th event start in a V8 Supercar with a second Bathurst crown after his win alongside Garth Tander for Holden in 2009.
“Nice stat at a nice event,” Davison told AAP.
“Massively psyched up for this weekend. One because Bathurst in itself, regardless of what happens the rest of the year, is the one you want to win.
“On the other hand if I’m going to get back into the championship I’ve got to get 300 points this weekend.
“That’s my focus.”
Davison’s ambition is far from misguided, with the 30-year-old having a strong recent record at Bathurst.
Apart from his 2009 win with Holden Racing Team, he has also finished third in 2007 and could threaten to deliver Ford Performance Racing their first Bathurst crown if he finds the form earlier in 2012 which allowed him to secure six race wins.
“For sure I’ve experienced the lows of Bathurst but, no doubt about it, the last four or five years I’ve genuinely been a contender,” Davison said.
“I come here well aware that anything can happen but knowing that we should be a contender.
“Let’s just hope our preparation’s been right which will give us luck and hope the racing gods are kind to us as well.”
