Whincup wins another Supercars race in Qld

Star Holden veteran Jamie Whincup is heaping pressure on Ford rival Scott McLaughlin’s Supercars championship lead after claiming another victory at the Townsville SuperSprint.

Whincup took the chequered flag on Sunday to make it two wins from as many race starts this weekend to secure his 12th career victory at Reid Park.

The 122th win of his glittering career will go down as one of his easiest, starting from pole and building a comfortable lead ahead of fellow Holden driver Chaz Mostert.

Shane van Gisbergen edged out Tickford’s Cameron Waters to complete an all-Holden podium with Whincup’s Triple Eight teammate finishing third.

Whincup didn’t have to contend with McLaughlin, who qualified 13th before he piloted his Mustang to finish sixth.

The result closed McLaughlin’s championship lead over Whincup to 109 points.

“The car was fantastic. Got a good start and a good battle with Chaz in turn two there but from there the car was excellent,” Whincup said.

“The game is try and score as many points out of the weekend as possible so we’re in a good position but need to round it off in race three.”

Two-time defending champion McLaughlin will start the event’s third and final race better placed after he secured his 70th career pole and ninth of the season.

Waters ensured it would be an all-Ford front grid for race two after qualifying second, while Whincup will attempt to collect a weekend three-peat from the second row.

Sunday’s second race will begin at 3.40pm.
