Whincup qualifies fastest at Bathurst V8

Holden ace Jamie Whincup’s quick start to the Bathurst 1000 V8 Supercars weekend continued as he qualified fastest for Saturday’s top 10 shootout.

Whincup clocked a lap of two minutes and 07.7145 seconds at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit to qualify fastest for the shootout and put him in the box seat to be on the front row for Sunday’s race.

Holden’s Fabian Coulthard qualified second-fastest for the shootout with a 2:07.7931 while Ford’s Mark Winterbottom put together a last-gasp 2:07.9231 to take third position.

Winterbottom’s teammate Will Davison and race favourite Craig Lowndes also safely made it through to the shootout while defending champion Garth Tander crept into the top 10 despite colliding with a tyre wall early in the 40-minute session.

Saturday’s shootout will decide the starting grid for Sunday’s race.

Ford’s James Moffatt, son of four-time Bathurst winner Allan, had an eventful session with several near-misses and will start from 17th position in Sunday’s race.
