Whincup notches another V8s win

Holden star Jamie Whincup has completed a perfect weekend in Townsville with victory in Sunday’s 200km V8 Supercars race.

Despite starting from ninth on the grid, the three-time champion made it two wins from two starts this weekend, and five from eight at the Reid Park street circuit, after holding off teammate Craig Lowndes in an at-times epic battle.

The duo took control despite Ford Performance Racing’s three cars dominating the early stages with David Reynolds, starting on pole for the first time in his V8 career, leading teammates Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison.

All three Fords were passed in pit lane in the middle of the race after two great stops by TeamVodafone to put Whincup and Lowndes clear.

The teammates then challenged each other in the closing stages after a late safety car brought them together but Whincup held out to take the win from Lowndes.

Davison was third with Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander passing a fading Winterbottom to snatch fourth place.

Whincup will face an investigation for dropping his car off the jacks in his first pit stop with the rear wheels spinning, although it was unclear what punishment, if any, he’ll face.

The next event on the V8s calendar is at Queensland Raceway from August 3 to 5.
