Whincup not Frosty with Winterbottom

His nickname is Frosty but it could also describe Mark Winterbottom’s relationship with V8 Supercars series leader Jamie Whincup.

However, defending champion Whincup only had love for his Ford arch rival after Winterbottom claimed his maiden Bathurst 1000 with a dramatic win at Mount Panorama on Sunday.

But it had nothing on soon-to-be father-of-three Winterbottom’s plans after finally lifting the Peter Brock Trophy winner’s trophy on the mountain on his 11th attempt.

At first, Winterbottom looked like he would add another very public chapter to his feud with Holden rival Whincup when he strode into the post race press conference as Whincup spoke to reporters.

He slammed the Peter Brock Trophy down on the table right in front of Whincup, cutting the four-time Bathurst champion off mid-sentence.

But after an awkward micro-second, a smiling Whincup said: “Go easy mate, that’s worth 80 grand.”

Indeed Whincup had no complaints after Winterbottom held out his desperate final lap lunge to seal his Ford Performance Racing Team’s maiden win and the Blue Oval’s first since 2008.

“I didn’t really lose. I got beaten by a class act today,” Whincup said.

“We gave it all we had.”

Winterbottom respectfully nodded at Whincup’s tribute after realising a dream on the mountain.

He showed remarkable pace over the entire weekend at Bathurst to finally break through with a maiden win in the 161-lap epic.

And Winterbottom was not showing any sign of slowing down afterwards.

Asked how special it was to have his young family track-side for the historic win, Winterbottom said: “My wife Renee definitely helped me a lot this weekend.

“I was up coughing last night between two and three (in the morning) and she got me some maple syrup – and that is not code for anything.

“But there will be no sleeping tonight I will guarantee you that.

“Welcome baby No.3!”
