Whincup double with history-making Holden

Championship leader Jamie Whincup made it two from two to strengthen his grip on the championship title with victory in the second V8 Supercars race in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

The Holden driver once again outpaced Ford pole-sitter Will Davison after making a perfect start on the 5.5km Yas Marina Circuit.

In almost identical circumstances to Saturday’s first race, Davison finished almost three seconds behind Whincup, with New Zealand driver Shane Van Gisbergen scoring his second podium of the day with another third-place finish in his Ford.

With Whincup’s nearest championship rival Mark Winterbottom finishing sixth and fourth in Saturday’s two races, the Holden star’s series lead stands at 270 points.

The victory, his 10th of the season, also makes TeamVodafone Holden the most successful individual car in Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars history with 26 wins.

He breaks the previous record held by Marcos Ambrose’s two-time championship-winning Pirtek/Stone Brothers Falcon BA.

The third and final race of the round starts at 8.30pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
