Whincup claims second pole at The Bend

The Bend looks set to produce another twist to the Supercars championship race.

The series lead of Ford’s Scott McLaughlin’s is under serious threat from Shane van Gisbergen after Holden dominated qualifying for Sunday’s 200km race at the maiden Supercars round at Tailem Bend, an hour’s drive from Adelaide.

Jamie Whincup grabbed pole position for The Bend SuperSprint’s Sunday finale after a scorching qualifying lap of one minute 48.64 seconds.

He was 0.10 of a second faster than the previous best lap mark set by teammate van Gisbergen on Friday.

But McLaughlin’s biggest concern will be nearest series rival van Gisbergen, who qualified second with Holden’s local hope Tim Slade third quickest.

McLaughlin’s slim 41 point series lead appears vulnerable after qualifying a lowly 10th on the challenging 18-turn, 4.95km track.

His fellow Kiwi van Gisbergen is the man to beat at the $110 million circuit after winning Saturday’s opening 120km race from second spot.

McLaughlin – who started the maiden round with an 89-point series lead – was sixth on Saturday.

“We thought we made some gains but the car didn’t improve over the session,” McLaughlin said.

“We are 10th. We have to get on with it, make the good out of the bad days.”

It was Whincup’s 79th career pole and second straight at The Bend as Holden dominated Sunday’s qualifying.

Holden boasted seven entries in the top 10 with McLaughlin the only Ford driver.

“It’s a tough place around here. I am a bit gutted after yesterday missing out on the podium,” Whincup, who finished fourth on Saturday, said.

“There was a bit of anger there so I wanted to come out strong today.”

The 200km race starts at 1410 AEST.
