In a double blow to Ford rival Will Davison, Holden’s Jamie Whincup has claimed pole position for both of Sunday’s V8 Supercars races in Perth.
Whincup sounded his intentions when he leapfrogged Davison to reclaim the series lead by finishing second in Saturday’s opening 120km race at Barbagallo Raceway.
And Whincup is now in the box seat to build on his 51-point championship lead over Davison after his heroics on Sunday.
In an unusual format, qualifying for Sunday’s two races were held within 10 minutes of each other – one session using hard tyres and the other on the faster softs.
Despite the variables the contrasting tyres can conjure, Whincup remained the constant by remarkably topping the time sheets in both sessions.
In the qualifying opener, Whincup was impressive as he clocked 56.3260 seconds to hold out Saturday’s 50-lap event winner Mark Winterbottom (56.3289) and Davison (56.3439).
But Whincup saved his best until last.
His Holden teammate Craig Lowndes appeared to have pole position in the second qualifier locked up before the session was stalled by a red flag after Taz Douglas hit the trackside sand.
When the session resumed there was barely a minute left on the clock – enough time for Whincup to produce a stunning 55.29 second lap and snatch pole away from Lowndes (55.42).
Davison (55.58) was third fastest.
Davison will be determined to reverse his fortunes after a first lap crash on Saturday ended any chance of claiming a seventh straight podium finish this season.
Somehow he managed to finish Saturday’s race with damaged suspension to at least collect 20 competition points and reduce Whincup’s championship lead.
