Volvo unveils engine for maiden V8s season

Scott McLaughlin’s dream of driving for a factory-backed team is finally coming to life, with Volvo unveiling the engine it will use in its maiden V8 Supercars championship season.

The manufacturer is joining the category in 2014 as Volvo Polestar Racing, in partnership with existing outfit Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM).

The team will race two of the brand’s S60 model sedans – still under wraps – steered by young gun McLaughlin and a second yet-to-be-confirmed driver.

“Today is a significant milestone for us on our journey to the grid,” Volvo Car Australia managing director Matt Braid said at the launch in Sydney on Friday.

This weekend’s championship finale at Sydney Olympic Park will cap off Kiwi rookie McLaughlin’s first year as a fulltime V8 Supercar driver.

It’s been a debut season to remember for the 20-year-old, who’s enjoyed two race wins in a GRM Holden – including a breakthrough victory at Auckland in April.

But McLaughlin is raring to get some laps in his new car.

“It’s all coming to life now. It’s something you dream about as a kid, being a factory driver,” he told AAP.

“It’s probably the busiest year of my life coming up now.

“I’ve got this weekend, then I’ve got a little bit of testing with these guys (before) I go home and chill out for a bit.

“I can’t wait for it to start. I can’t believe it’s been a year already that I’ve been in the main game.”
