Toby Price looking to reclaim Dakar title

Less than two months after breaking his leg at the Dakar Rally, Australian motorcyclist Toby Price is already preparing to reclaim the title at next year’s race.

The 29-year-old Red Bull athlete, who became the first Australian to win the two-week race in any category in 2016, crashed in stage four of this year’s race, breaking his left femur in four places.

“To kind of bomb out on the fourth day and not really keep myself there in contention for it, it’s definitely very disappointing,” Price told AAP on Wednesday.

“There’s always another year of Dakar. We’ve got to get ready for 2018 now – try to go back fitter and stronger and healthier, and see if we get the title back.”

Price is already off crutches and is confident he will be back racing on the bike by June, with his sights set on the Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs.

“I’m working hard at it to get back into racing as soon as possible but as safe as possible,” he said.

In the meantime he will compete in the Stadium Super Trucks at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide this weekend.

“It’s a lot easier on the body – I’m sitting down so I don’t even use the left leg at all,” he said.

“Four-wheel racing is a lot of fun but the two-wheeled stuff is my main priority. I still love my bikes.”
