Supercars restarts with usual frontrunners

Supercars has resumed at a spectator-less Sydney Motorsport Park, with Holden pair Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup splitting Saturday’s opening practice sessions.

The usual suspects have made the early running in the first event since March’s Australian Grand Prix was cancelled mid-round, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to change the world.

Two-time defending Scott McLaughlin finished second in both sessions ahead of qualifying for the first of three 33-lap races at the Sydney Supersprint.

Seven-time champion Whincup admitted he felt rusty back in his Commodore, but was just glad to be racing again after 107 days.

“Real quick, fast sessions here and straight into P1; literally no time to do anything…and then straight into P2,” Whincup said.

“I feel like we’re going back in time with those three-race formats we used to do a long time ago.

“I’m hitting the wrong buttons on the steering wheels – I’m definitely rusty and you can tell I’ve been out of the car for three-and-a-half months, but hopefully that gets better as the day goes on.

“The winner of today is going to be the one that makes the least mistakes.”

Ford’s Lee Holdsworth powered home in the second session to finish third, while Penrite Racing’s Anton De Pasquale put together two impressive practices for third and fourth finishes.

McLaughlin will be determined to hang onto the championship lead he took in Adelaide in February – this year’s only completed round.
